Paul Plummer piano

Biography

Paul Plummer was educated at New College, Oxford where he gained the FRCO and BA qualifications, before attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a post-graduate student of piano accompaniment in 1995. He has studied with Andrew Ball, Graham Johnson and Malcolm Martineau among others, and in the summer of 1997 was the Wilhemina Sandwen Fellow in vocal coaching and accompaniment at the Tanglewood Music Centre. Also appointed a Royal College of Music Geoffrey Parsons Junior Fellow (1998 to 2000), Paul is now one of London's best known young vocal accompanists.

Described in the European press as a "superb accompanist... with remarkably imaginative interpretations", "with great possession" (The Glasgow Herald, The Independent), and "able and sensitive" (Bonn General-Anzeiger), his work with singers has taken him across the UK and further afield. He has given recitals with artists such as James Bowman, Elizabeth Watts, Rebecca Bottone and Mark Wilde, in venues including the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall (The Lieder of Richard Strauss, 4-6 January 2008) and Tonhalle, Zurich. He has also recorded CD song albums with Simon Gay, Elin Manahan Thomas and most recently Nathan Vale (Love's Voice, SOMM Recordings). For BBC Radio 3 he has played many times on In Tune, and has accompanied two recitals recorded for later broadcast. He has a particular commitment to the English song repertoire, recently joining Rachel Nicholls in premières of song-cycles by Cecilia McDowall, Jamie Brown and John McCabe (at the Presteigne Festival and Firth Hall, Sheffield). Orchestral engagements have included performances with Lontano, the Orchestra of St John's Smith Square and the Orchestra of The Royal Opera House.

Paul is also much in demand as a conductor and repetiteur, he is founder-director of the semi-professional Oxford Bach Ensemble, with whom he will be directing St Matthew Passion on 16th March; he also works frequently for The Royal Opera as a repetiteur.
