Biography

Pianist and composer Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula studied Latin and Greek at Maturité Fédérale in Lausanne, and trained in piano improvisation and composition at both Lausanne and Geneva Conservatories. A composer since the age of 8, the 19-year-old pianist finished training in Switzerland in 2010. He is currently studying under Ronan O’Hora and David Dolan at the Guildhall School of Music in London, working toward a second Masters degree.

As a piano performer Mr Abdelmoula is a three-time 1st Prize winner with Distinction at the Swiss Youth Music Competition (2003, 2005 and 2009), and in 2007 was a 1st Prize winner with Distinction for composition at the National Competition of Orleans (France). He was awarded a recital opportunity at the Lucerne Festival in the summer of 2008. Also trained in film composition, he has improvised on music of the silent films of Fritz Lang and Jean Renoir. He was an award winner at the Swiss film music competition The Score in 2010.

Mr Abdelmoula’s works have been performed by Gilles Colliard and the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra in 2004 (Escales), Heinz Holliger, Sylvia Nopper and the Bern Camerata in 2008 (Le Loup-garou), the Ensemble Polhymnia (Psaume 88), the Fontane Trio (Pavane bleue) and the Swiss Chamber Soloists in 2009 (Promenade nocturne), and Laurent Gay and the Séquence Ensemble in 2010 (Sonatine pour chœur).
